  • The extent in which these products break down is into micro-pieces.

Biodegradable

  • Can take anywhere from a few weeks to hundreds of years to break down, depending on the conditions in which it is disposed of.
  • If disposed of correctly, it will break down into water, CO2, and biomass.
  • These products should state the conditions in which it should be disposed of in order to biodegrade.

Compostable

Compostable

  • These products break down quickly in the correct conditions into compost that can be then used to stimulate plant growth and sequester carbon.
  • Certified home compostable products break down within 90 days in home compost conditions. Commercially compostable products require specific commercial grade composting processes in order to break down quickly.
